Various other single-player modes exist as well, such as Time Attack and Survival. Tekken also features an optional Side Tournament mode where up to four players can compete in mini-tournaments for prizes. Some characters’ stories intertwine with others’, while some only have one ending. In Story mode, players progress through various fights against CPU opponents in order to advance the plot. The home versions of Tekken include additional modes not present in the arcade version, such as Practice mode and Story mode. There are also several environmental hazards. Tekken introduces a “bound” system, which if timed correctly, knocks the opponent off balance and allows for extra damage to be dealt after a combo. The basic gameplay consists of two fighters battling against each other until one is either knocked out or forced to submit.
In addition to acclaim, Tekken received several awards including GameSpot’s “Best Fighting Game” in 1998. By March 1997, it had shipped more than six million copies worldwide, making it the PlayStation’s best-selling game ever at that point. Tekken became one of the most successful arcade games during the 1990s and was ported to various home consoles. The game features a cast of characters with unique fighting styles and storylines, which Tekken’s producer Katsuhiro Harada has stated was inspired by real martial artists and Japanese culture. Also included are two minigames, Tekken Force (a beat-em-up stage that unlocks a new character) and Tekken Ball, a beach volleyball variant where characters are hurt by the ball.Tekken was one of the earliest fighting games at the time of its release and Tekken helped to popularize the genre. Fifteen new characters have been added to the roster. Differences include prominently featured side-stepping, allowing characters to retreat into the background and back during fights, new combo throws, and reduced jumping capabilities aiming for more realistic combat. Tekken 3 is a versus fighting game similar to its predecessors in the series. On his nineteenth birthday, Heihachi announces the King of the Iron Fist Tournament 3, hoping to use Jin to remove Ogre out of his way. When Ogre attacks his home and presumably kills his mother, Jin seeks out his grandfather and learns the martial arts of the family. Heihachi Mishima's only hope is his grandson Jin Kazama, who lives with his mother Jun, unaware of his legacy. Tekken Force, a paramilitary organization protecting the Mishima karate fighters, is nearly obliterated by the might Ogre.
